Claims to fame are commonplace amongst Sierra Nevada resorts, but no other ski area in the west embodies old-world alpine spirit like Squaw Valley. Site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley’s allure has always been its imposing geography. Carved from six peaks spread over 4,000 acres and served by 33 lifts, the resort is the very definition of down-to-earth carving. Yet for all the eye-popping pitches the mountain is friendly to all, cradling the novice and purring to families. Many runs are on gentle, soothing trails that offer a wide spectrum of delights.

Off-slope, Squaw’s base area offers climbing walls, shopping, Nordic touring, snowshoeing, and a bevy of bars and restaurants. The 4-star slope-side Resort at Squaw Creek and other luxurious accommodations including PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn, the Squaw Valley Lodge and the Village at Squaw Valley complement the resort’s magic. At night upscale eateries such as Graham’s, PlumpJack, and Six Peaks at the Resort at Squaw Creek create some of Northern California’s finest cuisine. Wildflowers abound throughout the valley in the spring and summer months. Visitors hike up Shirley Canyon, or swim, ice skate and dine at High Camp. Golfers tee off amidst a stunning natural setting at the Resort at Squaw Creek’s Robert Trent Jones golf course.
